CryptPad
On October 31st, 2014, XWiki began developing CryptPad as part of a French research project. CryptPad is an open-source, browser-based, suite of encrypted realtime collaborative editors. What that means for you is that you can edit documents in your browser at the same time as your friends and colleagues, and see their changes instantly.
Unlike other similar services, CryptPad uses encryption in the browser to prevent the service provider from reading the content of the documents, ensuring the confidentiality of your data.
Since then, the debate around privacy has become increasingly intense. The European Union has taken a strong stance by implementing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In this time, the small team of privacy engineers working on CryptPad has expanded its research outside of encryption technologies to include the legal frameworks related to privacy, the societal impacts of surveillance, and the particular threats facing communities from around the world. Their research has been peer-reviewed and published as a part of the 18th ACM Symposium on Document Engineering. The project is also a winner of the NGI award for Privacy and Trust-enhanced technologies.
Like XWiki, CryptPad is an open technology that you can run on your own machines. There are many community-hosted instances available on the web, and you can contribute to its development. Feel free to contact the team via email, Twitter, GitHub issues, or join the chat channel. Inquiries related to collaboration, funding, or press publications are very welcome.
