A fun way for kids to learn about open source!

At XWiki, we’re passionate about open-source and excited to support projects that inspire the next generation. One such project is the animated movie “Ada & Zangemann: A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream”, based on the successful illustrated book of the same name, by Matthias Kirschner and Sandra Brandstätter. The movie, supported by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), introduces kids to the world of open-source software in a fun, creative, and meaningful way.

Tune in tonight for the premiere!

  • What: Ada & Zangemann English Premiere
  • When: Tonight, 8 October, from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM CEST
  • Where: Global online event (invite-only for FSFE supporters and donors)
  • Special guests: Vint Cerf (one of the "fathers of the Internet") and Franziska Heine (Executive Director, Wikimedia Germany) will give special speeches.
  • Watch it later: After the event, the movie will be released on the FSFE website under a Creative Commons license, making it accessible to everyone.

Why Ada & Zangemann movie matters

Following the success of the book, which has been translated into 10 languages and reached over 20,000 children worldwide through workshops, readings, and discussions, FSFE is now releasing this story as an animated film. We’re proud to support animation which brings essential lessons about open-source software to even more young audiences, via our FOSS funding initiative.

The film tells the story of Zangemann, a wealthy inventor, and Ada, a curious young girl who begins experimenting with hardware and software. When Zangemann restricts access to technology, Ada realizes how crucial it is for everyone to have the freedom to tinker, modify, and create. The movie highlights the importance of technology and how it empowers individuals to shape their world.

Why should kids watch?

  • It makes learning about technology and coding fun and accessible.
  • It shows the power of teamwork and sharing in solving problems.
  • It promotes diversity, especially highlighting the role of women in tech.

After the premiere, the movie will be available under a Creative Commons license, making it a fantastic resource for parents, educators, and anyone wanting to introduce kids to the open-source movement.

We believe Ada & Zangemann will inspire young minds to explore the possibilities of technology and open-source software, helping them actively shape their own digital futures. Be sure to tune in tonight and enjoy this inspiring film with your family!
